BOWENFantasia for four violas, op. 41 (Viola Quartet)
PIAZZOLLA (arr. Kenny Choy)Fuga y Misterio (Viola Quartet)
This performance showcases two diverse chamber works, both written at end of the Romantic era and dawn of the 20thCentury.
Russian composer Victor Ewald worked professionally as a civil engineer, while composing music in his spare time. His contributions as a composer reflect a lifelong devotion to brass instruments for which he wrote four quintets, the first of which is performed here by the HK Phil Brass Quintet (Christopher Moyse, Robert Smith, Lin Jiang, Jarod Vermette and Paul Luxenberg).
York Bowen loved writing for the viola and was one of the first English composers to add original works to the modern viola repertoire. Hear Bowen's capacity to unfold rhapsodic melodies in his Fantasia for four violas, played by members of the HK Phil viola section (Andrew Ling, Li Jiali, Kaori Wilson and Ethan Heath). As an encore, the quartet performs Piazzolla’s Fuga y Misterio.
